Today is the second day of October.
Gloomy skies. Golden leaves. Raindrops knocking on the windowpane. Chili bubbling on the stove.
I stand by my love for every season in the year, but the month of October brings me so much happiness. It is romantic and cozy. The last notes of the summer drama fade and life begins to set the stage for winter, holidays, and frosty wind.
I am not a “fall girly”. Hot take. I hate Halloween and I think pumpkin spice is repulsive. I do not like commercialized seasons or holidays, and I believe that putting a price tag on priceless things will always cheapen it.
There, I just lost all of my 12 followers. Sorry, not sorry.
Yet, in spite of cultural trends, I am enamored with autumn.
The smells, the colors, the change in the wind. Pumpkins, harvest, hunting season. Time slowing down.
Maybe I love October because it is my birthday month. My first breath taken was of Michigan October air, twenty-three years ago.
Today I planted daffodils. A proper celebration of fall if you ask me. Bulbs planted into the ground, snuggled into the soil, tucked close with the hope of warm weather and life to return.
Those daffodil bulbs appeared dry, lifeless, and flaky. I have never planted daffodils before, so I have no idea if I planted them too deep, too shallow, or too close together. I have no control over what happens to them now, I can only rest in the knowledge that God has designed the daffodil to rest for the winter and bloom in the spring. And hope my pesky moles will leave them alone.
Planting daffodils gives me a happy picture. If something so dead can become so alive and beautiful, surely there is hope for us all to change and grow. I know in my own life God is continuing to change me, even though I was dead at one point. He is truly the master gardener of our hearts.
Anyway, friends, I hope you are enjoying your October this year.
What is your favorite thing about fall?
I won’t judge you if it is Halloween or pumpkin spice, but if it is, maybe balance that out and go plant some daffodils or tulips in your yard (for those of you in the northern hemisphere). We could all use some beauty to look forward to.
Kindly,
Myah Joy
